George Heron, a founding member of the Friends of Lochnagar, passed away on 23 March 2025 aged 86. He died in hospital with his beloved wife Pat at his side following a short illness.
He was a big man with a big heart and a personality and character to match.
For many years he was the voice of Lochnagar and contributed much to the annual July 1st ceremony.
With his wonderful Geordie accent he was always a pleasure to listen to whether he was reciting poetry, regaling stories and anecdotes or just passing on his vast array of military knowledge.
He had been unable to attend the Somme in recent years due to health issues but, despite this his zest for life never diminished.
He was a huge part of the Friends and remained a stalwart to the very end.
On 11 April, a contingent of Friends attended his funeral at St Bede’s Chapel, Teesside Crematorium, Middlesborough.
Rest easy canny lad and sleep sound.
