Become a Friend

Preserving the site for future generations involves a great deal of money and effort.
The Lochnagar Crater Foundation appreciates and values every contribution, in every form.

We hope our efforts kindle a greater interest for our cause and inspire others to join us.
We are especially inviting people to join and take an active roll in the work of the Foundation, either as a volunteer, or as a “Friend of Lochnagar”.

Our duty of care in the first place is directed towards preserving the Crater in the state it is and preventing it from further erosion.

This way we strive to keep the Crater as closely as possible to the state it was in after the Battle of the Somme.

It also means ensuring, wherever possible, the site is safe and accessible for visitors.

The wooden walkway was erected as the undulating rim path was extremely hazardous (and with greatly increased footfall) was being worn away.

The entrance pathway and the walkway around the Crater now affords wheelchair users or those with mobility issues the opportunity to view the Crater itself.

The Friends of Lochnagar is a group of volunteers, who dedicate their time and effort to the cause.

The group consists of people of all walks of life and we are a tight-knit group that works closely together to achieve our aims.

The group is always in need of more volunteers. Especially young people are invited to join us.

Volunteer / Support

Over 50 active volunteers regularly give hundreds of hours each year to help support the site. All have a variety of backgrounds and skills and each plays a vital, and much appreciated, role in preserving the Crater.

The Friends of Lochnagar

The Friends of Lochnagar was founded in 1989 by Richard Dunning and a small group of Great War devotees who regularly visited the Crater.
