We are looking forward seeing as many of you as possible for our traditional Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony on July 1st – the 44th consecutive event.
Hosted by Julie Thomson and beautifully filmed and live-streamed by husband David it reaches across, we are told, to all five continents via the wonders of the internet. If you haven’t yet been able to attend, may I urge you to try and come. To stand there shortly after the chill dawn, checking our watches exactly at the lads did 107 years ago is a moment unlike any other.
Then hearing the heart-stopping bangs of the maroons as they echo across Sausage Valley, followed by the whistles and the
sound of our resident piper slowly emerging from the mist is an unforgettable experience. And this year, to add to the poignancy, it is on a Saturday, the same day of the week that it was in 1916. RD
Bécourt Pilgrimage, July 1st
We again invite everyone to Bécourt Military Cemetery after the Friends’ meal at Hotel de la Paix on July 1st. Some folk will take the forty-minute stroll from the Hotel, but please drive if you wish, and rendezvous for our short evocative gathering and listen to poems and music taking the opportunity to reflect on our day and on those far off days of July 1916. This year we will include a piece of music written by a young German officer, Lt Franz Volz, who served at High Wood and now lies forever at Fricourt. We look forward to seeing you. IF
Our thanks to Albert Musée Somme 1916 for generous donation
These lovely people, regular and faithful supporters of Lochnagar for almost three decades, have most generously donated all their funds from 11th November to go towards helping pay for our walkway refurbishment. Every visitor should take in the unique atmosphere of this superb museum situated in mediaeval tunnels radiating from beneath the Basilique. So special thanks to President and Creator Thierry Gourlin, Guide and good friend Alain Perridon and all. RD
Special thanks to our dear friends the Somme Battlefield Pipe Band
This year we have even more to thank them for. For as well as being with us on July 1st each year and providing such a glorious display of pipe-playing at its very finest, they have donated a generous sum towards our Walkway. Thank you Yves Holbecq and all, and long may we be blessed by your stirring presence on that special day. RD
