Our progress on the replacement walkway

  • 7 September 2023
  • Uncategorised

Work is steadily progressing on the replacement walkway, and we expect to have commissioned and be on the way to completing 80 or so metres by the end of September 2023. We take this opportunity to thank wholeheartedly our local builder Arnaud Delescluse for his efforts as he continues with this backbreaking and necessary work.

However, it is rather daunting that we will still have approximately 200 metres left to finish to ensure we have safe and secure access all around the Crater rim, and with ramps being installed instead of steps, all visitors including those with reduced mobility will be able to experience the Crater and its hallowed environs.

It has been truly inspiring to receive the many donations from Friends and supporters over the last couple of years and alongside these, the trustees of the Lochnagar Crater Foundation continue to seek larger scale funding to ensure we can complete this essential work, including from the French tourism authorities, and although we are optimistic about those two grant applications, we cannot yet be sure of any funds nor how much might be approved by the responsible committees when they convene in the year.

As many Friends will know the Western Front Association gave a significant donation early in the project and there have been several large individual donations to the Walkway Appeal, but these have now been allocated and we still have a very long way to go. We are certain we will get there in the end and of course will keep everyone up to date with progress. IF
