At the end of May, from May 22nd to May 24th, Friends and Volunteers will travel to the Lochnagar Crater in order to get it in tip-top shape for the upcoming 110th Anniversary of the Battle on the Somme on July 1st.
It is always a bit of a surprise in which shape they will find the Crater. When Spring has been favourable for farmers’ crops, it also means weeds, brambles and shrubbery on the Crater’s site will have grown a lot, too.
The usually tranquil site will for a few days be filled with the noise of mowers and cutters, while others tend to woodwork, repair railings and fences, oil benches and do all sorts of maintenance work like cleaning the info panels. Also, new Commorative Plaques will be fitted onto the Walkway.
In the meantime, the site is still be accessible to visitors, who will get an impression of the work that comes with preserving the site for them and future generations.
Extra help is always very welcome. If you are interested in joining, take a look at Our Mission – Conserve section of the website and contact us!
